rejoice

read part 1 and part 2

“And Mary said:

‘My soul glorifies the Lord

and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

for he has been mindful

of the humble state of his servant.’”

Luke 1:46-48 NIV

a worshipful heart

No clearer insight exists into the brave and beautiful heart of Mary than this powerful New Testament psalm. As she is first acknowledged by another to be carrying the seed of God, these words pour from her mouth out of an overflowing heart. Their source is neither pride nor fear, but a humble acknowledgment of her own lowliness and a joyful exaltation of the Lord.

We can only imagine what Mary’s personal circumstances might have been previous to her acceptance of this great commission. Once she received her sacred burden, her difficulties certainly increased. Though she was highly favored in the eyes of God, such favor did not bring her a life of ease, wealth, or status: quite the opposite.

Still, her concern was not for herself; rather, she desired the Lord’s glory above all. Her song declares His greatness, His mercy; His power and provision; His justice, faithfulness, and love. Mary knows that she will be considered blessed by all future generations, and she desires that it be for one reason alone:

” … for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
holy is his name.”

Luke 1:49 NIV

Beloved, I know not what humble state you find yourself in this Christmas season. I know neither the weight of your burdens nor the richness of your blessings … but He does. And He, the One who sees and knows all—He is mindful of you. Will you allow His unwavering faithfulness, His unceasing provision, to well up within you with overflowing gratitude? Will you respond with adoration to His unstinting love and mercy?

Where there is grief, invite His comfort.
Where there is loss, ask Him to fill.
Where there is need, trust His provision.
Where there is heartache, allow Him to heal.

Will you, dear one, allow every other pressing need to grow quiet and simply, humbly, worship Him?

Will I worship?

As your heart softens and expands, may the grace and love of the Christ child be born in you anew. Bow down at the feet of the One who came to be Emmanuel, for He alone is worthy. Embrace the holy life and light given to you, and celebrate the rebirth of joy!
